South — this time all the way. While this one in McMurdo I did see another fat-tire bike at the South Pole, but didn’t get a snapshot… next time!
South — this time all the way. While this one in McMurdo I did see another fat-tire bike at the South Pole, but didn’t get a snapshot… next time!
it has been awhile. too long. i couldn’t resist a restart with a bike SO like my old one, and with the same basket that i have here. so glad to feel the breeze. and, i still have a few more tags left!
back from another season south — another opportunity for det-wire crafting… this time deux peugeot equipe. thanks to the team and to the good times shared in what could have been the tropics.
back in mcmurdo! despite optimism, we did not fly to the field on time… no big surprise and gives more time for enjoying nice things like hikes up observation hill, frosty boy, and maybe even a mountain bike ride!
happy birthday to you. happy birthday to you. happy birthday dear c. happy birthday to you!!! i wish that i drew this cute one, but have to credit the internets. a little rainy today, but being a birth day it is going to be glorious. croissants are waiting!
cyclopedia… i made it! too neat to be in art museum amongst bikes and bikers. exhibit included a pedersen, the buddy bike, a suitcase bike, the first recumbent, and one with a skate front. lots of classy racers. no christiania bike, but this cargo style is still going strong. of course this was in: portland! a bike themed weekend with pedal power prominent…
ring, ring, …splish, splash! big thanks to g for lovely gift to top off my trusty trek 520! feels fit to host a sea creature after this time on the water!
summertime seattle: floating living (featuring big brown bike + trusty canoe), floating flyer, floating viewing, and even floating baking!
the explorer’s journal: www.davidsparshott.com/portfolio/bike-watching/
bike watching is one half bike tagging — perhaps a mass movement is afoot? this was a fun find at my favorite bookstore…
detonation-wire bikes… probably need an explanation. first, they were made in antarctica. after explosives blew out during field work there remain some usable bits. i also had more time on my hands, crafty encouragement, and greater flexibility in my mind to tempt such an odd form of entertainment. but, entertaining it was. since we are still down here they also make a suitable gift — happy birthday to p!
last day in copenhagen after a wonderful few years. managed to eek out some sunshine yesterday but only barely enough to expose the photo — but i won’t forget what it looks like here! while i go, the bike stays. enjoy denmark my yellow friend, and keeping sporting about!
another another nice place. good beer and good atmosphere on many, many occasions over the years. not sure what the lacey bike out front is for, but assume it is for something lovely… no matter, the place has great beer.
another nice place — the torvehallerne market. fruits, vegetables, italian rolls, duck confit, french cheese, end-of-day smorrebrod, adorable baked goods, organic wine, pizza on a late-evening walk by, picnic fixings, fresh juice, fresh herbs, and other fabulously fancy foods…
n in town and a great night with unexpected participatory art (e.g. bbq bread on a stick). stepped up evening consumption with top-mart pizza/wine/tiramisu, and another wine capper on the way home. eating, drinking, and even talking about switzerland — when we saw this bike! n says: this is all about community.
no film today, but maybe tomorrow… i really appreciate having a place like this here! as i definitely posted enough bikes today. but, maybe it will be sunny again tomorrow?
i noticed some jupiter and saturn bikes, but not one from mars… but note this: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/index.html
sunny saturday! back to copenhagen with a bike-liking walkabout. start with one in the SUN… how did you take advantage of this today?
spots in the spotlight. thanks to c for a night sampling cph scene… instead of water-vapor isotopes!
thanks to kbhff food coop for green bounty, and to my basket for somehow holding it all in… although the waving chard did get some strange looks.
neighborhood find on a neighborhood jaunt. it is nice to be back! still looking for (small) danish gems at antique or flea markets — this street has shops with nice selection, any other recommendations?
bikes not bombs! compliments to seattle for bike love. thanks to all for all during a pre-move planning visit. friends and food scene and university and wedding and pastries on a stoop — even a chocolate-chip cookie worth competing against! ready, k?
c surprises with a lovely borrowed tandem to cruise the summer streets of slc. thanks to a and a for the lending, and to c for the inviting…
not the most representative, but a bikeholder for novi sad, serbia. thanks to i, c, and j for sunny adventures!
i really really like this bike shop and bike concept. http://www.baisikeli.dk/
if you ever need any help, let me know!
second sighting of this style and color… tagged! does the license plate actually trace to the owner? personalized?
j’s bike… on the wall (if you can’t tell what is going on). indoor time for this bike on a copenhagen summer day that california folks would fear during the winter — !
louisiana museum day with c and g. pink caviar… picnic! even a late afternoon peek at kronborg slot.
i am trying to ask and receive more questions these days, so i will add a few here: 1) what is ‘le fix’? 2) what has been the best part of the consistently great weather of the past week(s)?
thanks to my nansensgade correspondent for this one! (though it would be hard to miss) hope i can witness this feat of fluorescent green and shag at some point…
what up, holmes? that is actually the name of this built-up beauty! thanks to t for feature… and there is plenty of room for the other ones! (hallway backdrop, and… uncle sam says: chill out)
collection of t’s bikes bring some class to this site. hippie heaps take note! univega gran turismo…this one has “Dia Compe cantilever brakes with Kool Stop salmon pads. The fenders are MKS longboards”. thanks to t for sharing this set of beauties.
carbon cycle and water cycle out for first ride. copenhagen tour included a stop at my favorite floating home. someday…
because it’s french! (a note to my dear: j’ai compris) comment allez-vous voisin? le vélo est agréable…
tandem tribute: the schwinn twinn! while this is not my picture (credit to the internets), i did see a twinn in salt lake city… and this is a placeholder until i can take my own photo, or get my own!
other people take note of copenhagen bikes… and they even write a book about it! fun book just out: copenhagen city of bicycles. fun window feature with hr. velo bike: http://hrvelo.blogspot.com/
the bridge was people packed this night, as with most sun-soaked evenings this past week. bikes staged alongside the rows of people sharing beers, playing music, and also watching swans on the lake.
daylight. nightlight. i decided to start a new set of photos that highlight bikes, but also surroundings. and also pairings. (most bikes did not receive tags). this is all put together after my meanderings, using whatever i collected for the day. most motivation here from spring-time sunlight!
i really like these bikes. and a nice green one on a sunny friday walk to appreciate sprouting green evident all over the city. purple blossoms also noted.
needed a post to commemorate this extra day in this leap year, and i wish i could leap onto this bike! (and have someone to pedal me around) not sure if this bike gets much activity now, but when the sun comes out it looks ready…
white and purple find in the new neighborhood — mini mickey, and sound of detroit (what is that?). nice evening!
something doesn’t fit with the others! glad to be back in copenhagen and see more bikes. Sad to be away from california and see no more oranges…
First days in New Zealand and characterful bikes o’ plenty: a Penny Farthing in action(!), a blue Petersen export, and the loveliest taxi in town. Too busy touring Tasmania in Tintouin to find good bikes, but a terrific visit there too.
No new real bike spotting this year in Antarctica, but while delayed waiting for flight back I spotted this photo while reading one of many past-date National Geographic magazines.
salt lake city library has been a great work spot, and the peugeot has been great transport for my month in utah. thanks to j for the bike! it was a fun surprise for the peugeot in the snow this morning!
my road bike has been a strong companion this summer, and while i didn’t get a shot of the bright blue action i wanted to give it proper thanks for the sunny times and apologize for leaving it behind for the not-so-sunny times… it will have the danish winter to consider i could be a racer!
sunshine spotting: chocolate. (backdrop dannebrog & copenhagen stock exchange). did you also notice the skull sticker?
the handlebars caught my eye, but with a closer look at the back of the bike… books about chocolate and wine?
sunny eve part 1: still looking for a cruiser+basket+flowers, but two of three with one on the side is still a good find.
showcase for new bike tags. looking for cruiser with basket of flowers, and i found something better! thanks to E for stamp support and to typewriter for a quick job well done.
ou est la rue saint michel? je ne comprende pas. despite language barriers it has been a fantastic frenzy of france/french/family fun. paris to perringnier to provence. of course we have found cheese, baguettes, lavender, wine, and even a frenchman wearing beret+suspenders.
bornholm bike tour! two days of sunshine and ferries and cycling. beachside camping, roadside stands, smoked herring, rye bread, and some local beer.
shout out to cali(fornia). left one spotted in slagelse. right one spotted in copenhagen. any chance it is the same bike… on a similar tour?
quick find between sun/rain showers. and new streets to show my dear snipets of the copenhagen life. (note: first bike to receive properly *typed* tags!)
what a neat pair! yellow/green tagged, but both noted equally. i especially like the handlebars on the black ride — hopefully these can be seen in this photo. function that really is fun.
felt like spring today, and i was happy to finally snap shots of this style of bike… i like the lines! two of four were tagged, and the yellow puch was especially fitting after my week in vienna noting these austrian beauties. turquoise in the sun was calling to me.
now this one was really perfect for what i was scouting out. instead of the normal tags, i had a special treat to leave in a basket — and this basket was definitely the one for it! (treat akin to randomness from the automats that dispense bouncy balls and other toys, and i hope it was a fun find!)
my mind conjured memories of pink bikes i have noted in the past weeks, so the next tag in my bag was ready for one i remembered seeing before… however, the pink on pink hearts struck my romantic side and was tagged!
brown+blue! how could this not catch my eye on this saturday sportabout… i was waiting to be inspired and here it was.
(concept discussion leads friend to instant inspiration) friends and birthday leads to champagne and balcony leads to jazz and dining leads to beer and smoke leads to caviar and crackers leads to bike and photo.
salt lake city, utah. ski utah! what a splendid visit. my dear, welcoming friends, skiing uphill, packaged chicken, old friends, routine cooking/baking/eating, french (+wine), go to the upper hot springs, stout, arches, red rocks, canyoneering: “the innovative may get by with less”. and, neat bike racks all over the city!
days here have been very gray lately. so, wearing orange and red, i went for a sunday walk with gray, orange, and red in mind. handmade black/white checkerboard was the liveliest version of gray that i saw on the streets. peugeot in orange/red caught my eye! i was not prepped with tags for the bottom two bikes, but they fit the theme (and another theme of their own — do these low riders have a name?).
what a night: i spotted another schwinn in copenhagen! parked nearby to my own nonetheless. heading home after lovely Chandeleur festivities (French for “pancake day”). dark night and grainy photo but it is the real thing. looking good, but i am curious to know the type!
bike spotted in the australian outback (or melbourne). while friend tours actual australia, i am in san francisco with the holder of an australian passport + old friends/family. stocking up on sunshine! hope the harsh winter has treated my schwinn better than the looks of this old friend.
takaka(ahhh), new zealand. the quiet revolution. chill out! what a wonderful time touring the south island. “go to golden bay”, stay left, bob marley, sheeps, mt. cook!, wine-decisions-wine, shambalah caravan, penguins?, it is good to have a french guy.
bikes in the white wilderness! for those following in southern california, i can make a good case that summer in antarctica has been more pleasant than winter in the northern hemisphere. yes, greetings from antarctica! great time. great team. and even a few bikes to be found on the dirt and ice roads of mcmurdo station, but mostly gar-ar-ing around are distinctly non-bike transport — for those less interested in modes of antarctic transport, the bottom snapshots are a better sampling of the experience. merry merry happy happy.
my cousin rides bikes – fast! we rode around seattle some years ago before he became so fast and famous. now he talks about his “kit”, and i marvel at the pictures… like this one! let this post be the first in the i could be a racer series. (aside: congratulations newly wedded b+e!)
backpost feature #2: carrier bikes! not actually sure what these neat front loaders are called, but i think they make a great ride. sturdy classics.
backpost feature #1: christiania bikes! lovely fall day spent biking in pursuit of these coveted bikes with character. surely more to add, but consider this collage a humble start at the catalogue.
hamburg edition. choice meeting in front of altona museum (“wir sind das altonaer museum!”). thank you to friend of new friend. huge credit for creative burst featured on 1.about page. the boat, containers, fish morning, astra, automats, and destiny. bounce, bounce, …
a tag, at last! this one caught my attention awhile back, and as i pass it on my way to work it is nice to give this old bike the recognition it deserves.
cambridge/oxford. bikes, and more bikes! no surprise in towns defining “college”. lovely visit to esteemed colleagues, and to oldest friend. most pictures from walking tour of oxford (pub/scotch and tea/scone stops inadequately represented).
nuuk, greenland. bike scenes and hike scenes. old town nuuk, river valley near kapisillit, kangia nunata sermia, and staggering fjord-scapes.
wedding weekend on sapelo island, georgia. iconic south: live oaks / spanish moss / reynold’s mansion / biking to swim in warm atlantic water.
portland, MAINE! bike + coffee. reunited with friends, and also with microbrews, baked goods as i know them, tacos, salted caramel ice cream, and trampolines.
first post of the first bike series (and following the schwinn sequence). a schwinn black phantom. send me photos of your first bike!
the schwinndy city! i have been in chicago the past few days and there are very cool bikes, particularly schwinn bikes, *everywhere*. while helping my sister gather life bits for a new apartment, i have kept myself very entertained snapping shots of my bike’s brethren. no sportabout sightings, but i did note a traveler, a varsity, a racer, a super le tour, a prelude, and a sprint.
schwinn has a long history in the u.s.a., with a start in chicago in 1895.
stunning! i can hardly stand how amazing this bike is. i definitely cannot stand how amazing the person riding it around is. lucky seattle! photos courtesy of: http://boxerbicycles.com/ (thank you)
friends respond with bike pics! first up: mysteriously safe. don’t let the dark & grainy photo deceive you, i have seen the true amount of reflective tape on this bike (which would make any bike commuter swoon).
one, two, three, tagged! so far there has been major lack of cruisers in this log of noted bikes. crazy, because i really like cruisers. all colors. all cruisers that made me smile this week are represented, but on this sunny afternoon the last one was particularly smile-worthy and ended up with a tag.
in this busy area, i wonder what to do if caught tagging (literally: tying a homemade tag) on the noticed bike… awkward interaction vs. meeting nice person? after curbside gelato, encouraging friends and i found this blue beauty also enjoying the sun — nice color, nice lines.
concept launch: gold. red. ghost! first day of tagging bikes makes for a good afternoon with visiting friends (very supportive visiting friends).
first post has to be my own bike because i do like it. a good old schwinn cruiser from california — a schwinn sportabout, actually. we should all sportabout more often.
